Pandor to visit Khayelitsha fire victims


b_290_200_16777215_00_images_news_naledi-pandor.JPGToday, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor will visit survivors of the Khayelitsha fire disaster where temporary Identity documents will be issued to survivors. All residents who lost the identity documents are urged to be around the area so they can be issued new documents. Ongekhoyo kakho.

Umlilo lo occurred on New Year's Day as three fires blazed over amatyotyombe aliwaka across the Cape Peninsula and Cape Flats. Three residents have since been confirmed dead and 3000 have been displaced.


The aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, is offering help. Gawa who is the Gift of Givers spokesperson told the SABC that his foundation will build 100 houses, “These houses will be completed with doors, windows, beds in there and we will fill it up with groceries and whatever it takes to start again,” he said.

He furthermore noted that more needs to be done to prevent such from happening again. “We need to educate them, when I did projects we had workshops running to prevent fires because we have to do this.”     

Disaster management will also assist with building material, food and other urgent needs.

A call has been made to all citizens to donate items wherever possible.
