You are here: Mzansinews uTata uMandela steadily recovering
Former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela has recovered from a lung infection and surgery. The surgery was done to remove gallstones that kept him at One Military Hospital in Pretoria for nearly three weeks in December.
The office of the President said "President Mandela has made steady progress and ... clinically, he continues to improve…, he has recovered from his surgical procedure and the lung infection," according to a news24 report.
President Jacob Zuma said uTata "continues to receive high care" at his Johannesburg home and "his daily routine is being gradually re-established."
Umadala is also reportedly reading newspapers, sitting up in bed, and seeing visitors, according to the Associated Press.
The President applauded Mandela on his recovery and said the anti-apartheid hero has "the love and support of all South Africans".
This was Mandela’s longest stay in hospital since ukuphuma ekubanjweni kwakhe ngo 1990.
