About 50 Groenpunt prisoners in Deneysville, Free State, suffered injuries in a stampede this morning.
A riot had broken out around 4pm yesterday when prisoners refused to eat and started setting fires.
Five prison workers also suffered minor injuries during the stampede.
SABC reported that the riot had occurred when some 227 inmates barricaded their unit to prevent officials from entering at the maximum security section.

Police reinforcements from Vereeniging, Sasolburg and Welkom were called in and stun grenades were used to make way for the police, according a mail and guardian report.
Police spokesperson Constable Peter Kareli told Sapa early morning today that the situation was peaceful. "We are now going back to assess the damage and investigate what led to the unrest," he told Sapa, according to news 24 reports.
Prisoners who were involved in the riot will face criminal charges.
