You are here: Mzansinews Strike Looms in Mining Sector
With a 60% wage increase demand and a low down on Gold and other minerals NUM calling for a nation wide strike is on the way.The industry still governed by greed and Amajitas being paid peanuts for their sweat NUM believes this is the best way forward.Currently miners are being paid a range of R4000 monthly of which they would like increased to a minimum of R6-7000.
Num reiterates the fact that the Gold prices are low should not be raised as an issue on undermining their request considering the fact that when the prices were high the employers did not offer the employees a pay hike.
The mining industry has already said they can't afford the current wage demands with some considering a shut down.
The industry incurred heavy losses through the Marikana strike and has since been in decline with an estimated 50,000 jobs being lost.
